London Mayor Jokes: Women Go to College to Find Husbands #notlaughing

It’s good to know that people still think women go to college to get their MRS degree.

At the World Islamic Economic Forum, Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Razak spoke about the place of women in Islamic societies and remarked, "Before coming here, my officials have told me that the latest university intake in Malaysia, a Muslim country, 68% will be women entering our universities."

To which London Mayor Boris Johnson interjected it’s because they “have got to find men to marry.”

First of all, way to undermine the accomplishments of an entire culture, especially one you’re trying to form an alliance with. Classy move there, chief.

The joke was met with a handful of laughs, but according to reporter Sophia Furber "There were some groans from audience members – especially from professional, hijab-wearing ladies." I’ll bet.

Sure enough the @MayorofLondon Twitter account has been exploding with sarcastic attacks, where women are airing out their degrees and asking Johnson for “dating advice.” The Everyday Sexism campaign group, commented on their own Twitter account saying that the Mayor’s remarks were "pathetically archaic, unacceptably sexist and hopelessly out of touch." To say the least.

It's so gross that society still treats marriage as a woman’s be-all-end-all: the ultimate goal. A few weeks ago I was talking about my career and my mother remarked, “It’s too bad Rutgers couldn’t help you out with finding a boyfriend. There’s 30,000 students and you haven’t met one guy you want to date. And you’re going into a women-centric field, so if you’re going to meet a husband, it’s now.”

…I’m 22. And I really hope my mother hasn’t been spending thousands of dollars so I could buy a boyfriend. I went to fashion school for my first two years, so already that would be a waste of money.

Why can't we just celebrate a woman's pursuit of education for what it is: a pursuit of education. Are there women that would maybe attend college events in the hopes of meeting potential romantical interests? Sure. But that's like saying there are men who go to college to get laid. Which...like I said, I go to Rutgers, so that actually doesn't sound too incredulous.

...the point is, the line was totally inappropriate, immature and old-fashioned sexist. Malaysian women deserve more respect, Muslim women deserve more respect, all women deserve more respect. Because in the midst of trying to become knowledgeable, accomplished, independent women, there's always some politician with a bad hair piece trying to make us into a joke.
