Mehran is a six-year-old Afghani girl who is being raised by her parents as a boy. This phenomenon is called bacha posh, and translates to “girl in boy’s clothes”. In Afghanistan boys are valued higher than girls; they are able to carry their father’s name and be privy to his inheritance. Women are alienated from any kind of social standing and not really even allowed to be seen let alone walk freely. Read More
Reporter Ines Sainz was scheduled to interview Mark Sanchez of the NY Jets, when she got a little more attention than she bargained for. Ines, a reporter for Azteca TV (a Mexican station) and a former Miss Spain pageant queen, was the alleged victim of sexual harassment. She was "cat-called" as well as whistled and stared out while at Jets Florham Park. Ines has been criticized for being dressed inappropriately, although she was wearing jeans and a tee shirt. I don't think Mrs. Sainz style of dress had much to do with the real issue--her body. Fashion’s Night Out could very well have been called ‘Shoplifting’s Night Out”. There were a million people in every store, all the merchandise was scattered, and the staff was drunk. This technically made for the perfect crime, but we didn’t want to 1. Get caught or 2. Tarnish the rep of FNO, so we kept our hands in our pockets. These boys have their hands on something else to thwart the universal desire to steal eyeliner. Read More
Fashion’s Night Out is a night of fun filled fashion events taking place in stores around town. I experienced my first FNO last night, in NYC. There was so much happening, and it was all happening at the same time, so it was a good idea to pick one event you really wanted to go to and let anything else just happen. I decided to see Sarah Silverman instead of the Olsen’s judging a karaoke competition, and it is not something I regret. Everyone who was out last night was totally amped, so the vibe was really good. Read More
Let me preface this review by saying I really liked this movie. “Going the Distance” is about a couple dealing with a long distance relationship in an economically unstable period. They meet in New York City and have what Erin (Drew Barrymore) assumes is just a one night stand, but Garrett (Justin Long) extends their tryst to breakfast. Garrett confesses that he just got out of a relationship, which relaxes Erin because she wants to keep things between them light. She’s working as a summer intern at a newspaper and has to go back to San Francisco in six weeks. Read More

TheSquareJaw.com

BY Emilie Branch in Arts

TheSquareJaw.com is a site devoted to capturing the male gaze. I founded the site because I felt that male beauty, realized by women, is sort of absent from the photography canon. I’m striving to capture men; specifically, the way they look at women. Bruce Weber is my ultimate hero—his pictures of men are always so beautiful, though I wonder how the subject’s gaze would alter if if there were an underlying attraction. I think you can see the connection between the photographer and the subject, especially in sexual terms. Other than that, the guys are all really hot. Read More
This summer I discovered my new favorite blog, ManRepeller.com. The site pokes fun at trends, which Leandra Medine (the blog’s creator) deems as “man repelling”. For example, you won’t get laid if you’re wearing drop crotch harem pants, or shoes that look like grizzly bear paws. Karl Lagerfeld isn’t looking out for your sex life. Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on how you look at it) for me, I cannot afford Chanel…and I have sex somewhat regularly. Read More

Porn V. Porn

BY Emilie Branch in Sex

If there’s a camera with a steady red light on in your bedroom while you’re having sex, you’re technically shooting a porn.  This is a fact. If you’re boyfriend is holding the camera (even if there is no red light) than this is certainly true. You will probably break up, which is amplified if you’re a “celeb”. This is because more people (including the other famous ones) want to have sex with you than they do with norms, or because you’re a megalomaniac narcissist. Read More
No, not really—she’s a typical fixture in Cosmopolitan Magazine, and generally represents what the magazine stands for (like shopping, and being sexy). However, that didn’t stop the editors from writing the phrase “Untamed Va-jay-jays” around the area where her actual vagina should be. It’s definitely eye-catching if not because it’s offensive yet cutesy than because it’s visually so white and bold. Read More

Blame Degrassi

BY Emilie Branch in Music

Before R&B sensation Drake or “Dizzy Drake”, was in with the Young Money crew he had a leading role in Degrassi as character Jimmy Brooks. Jimmy gets broken up with repeatedly and literally shot in the back, which results in his being confined to a wheelchair. Though he overcomes adversity and discovers his musical talent through this disability, he still gets his heart broken a third time. Maybe it’s this Degrassi baggage that’s been weighing down on the young Canadian, but something is on Drake’s mind. Read More
