A baby cheetah was born at the Jacksonville Zoo, but started losing weight soon after birth.  The cub’s mother was too old to produce breast milk and therefore unable to feed it. Zookeepers sent the little cheetah to Busch Gardens, where it is currently receiving 24-hour care. When it is grows old enough, the cub will join a group of cheetahs in the new park habitat. There are only about 12,400 cheetahs left in the wild. This cub, born in captivity is ... Read More
Chinese scientists have discovered that male mice bred without the chemical serotonin are attracted to other male mice, not females. This is the first time an isolated neurotransmitter has been easily linked to homosexuality. When serotonin is re-injected into the mice brains, they show a preference for females again. Mice are not humans. The findings are interesting because they are so simple, mice that lack the gene necessary to produce serotonin will be ... Read More
Ice cream made from breast milk was banned from London gourmet shop the Icrecreamists, based on a complaint regarding a perceived health risk. The mother’s milk was screened at a leading medical clinic, pasteurized, and then served in a martini glass with lemon zest and vanilla for about $22.50.  The compliant was filed by two men, who reported it to the Westminster council. The legal response was a prompt removal of the ice cream based on the need to ... Read More
Welcome to the latest in period technology... “Sexy” period technology. The innovative minds over at sexyperiod.com have invented underwear that soaks up your menstrual blood; think panties with a built in pad. The underwear is apparently leak-proof (the padding extends throughout) and the site claims it’s comfortable. It’s also the cutest diaper I’ve ever seen. The advertising copy is a bit over the top: “Always chic, always ... Read More

Hipster Stripper

BY Emilie Branch in Sexy

The men behind NY venues The Smile and Jane Ballroom have decided to open a strip club for a certain type of NYC crowd. The Westway is the renamed Westside Gentleman’s Club, located off the Westside Highway in Manhattan. The Westway differs from the former, seedier, Gentleman’s club because it’s an exclusive part-time strip club—for hipsters. It seems that impresarios Matt Kleigman and Carlos Quirarte’s have opened a strip club for ... Read More

DIY SPA

BY Emilie Branch in Crafty

Winter is not my favorite time of year. I can’t stand being in the bitter cold, only to come home to a heat that seems to suck all the moisture out of my pores. Although I should probably just drink more water, I’d like to use the season as an excuse to try out some elaborate, at home, spa treatments. Here are the best DIY Spa recipes I could find; the best part is that everything is paraban free! ... Read More
I met Jodee Knowles in Perth last year and completely fell in love with her. Our mutual friend informed me she was an artist and showed me her portraits on Facebook. We would stare at them, and marvel. I saw her characters as drug raddled fashion types—like she was mocking everything around her, or what she might be perceived as. I decided to check in with Jodie, to see how her work has evolved and find out what she had to say about it.  1. What ... Read More

New York Magazine’s cover feature this week is entitled “Waking Up From the Pill”. The article discusses the Pill’s 50th anniversary, its great effect on women’s reproductive freedom, and its consequence. The article’s author, Vanessa Grigoriadis, poses the argument that with the Pill came an ignorance of the body. The theory is women are no longer conscious of what their body is telling them, because there is a pill to control ... Read More
The premiere of Bridalplasty surpassed my fears and expectations. The first episode introduced the twelve contestants who will compete for a chance to win their dream wedding and dream body, with plastic surgery. It all seems so misguided. It was disturbing to watch the plastic surgeon mar their bodies in consultation to the point where they looked like they were “part of a tribe.”  There were requisite sob stories. Bridalplasty is allegedly a ... Read More
