Really, TVLand? 'The Cougar'??!

BY debbie in TV

This Wednesday, TVLand is set to begin airing it's new reality series, 'The Cougar,' hosted by Vivica A. Fox and featuring someone in their 40s who's looking for a lover among people in their twenties. I have only one question: hasn't this been done before? ; Strangely enough, on the preview video for TV Land's show, you see the guys talking about why they like 'older women,' (like it's a fetish). I've never seen them ask that question of the contestants ... Read More
Laurie posted a while back about the US version of this ad for the Schick Quattro, which is currently airing on TV. I don't know whether this British version of the ad is airing in the UK or if it's just intended as a hilllaaarrrious viral video, but I can tell you one thing: while it is more outrageous in it's cutesy double entendres (watch for the 'tulips on a mound' bit), I find it even more irritating than the more docile US version. This ad is aimed at women, ... Read More

Then you've most likely been subjected to those outrageously annoying 'Weekender' NY Times ads. There is simply no hiding from them - they are as ubiquitous in this city as rats. My BF and I are particularly incensed by the Liz Phair-like 'So, the deal is...'girl. Now, finally, some folks have made a spot-on parody of it, and I can't stop watching it. It's like a cool summer shower, washing away the greasy buildup of all these years of watching the irritating ... Read More
You know how the media can't stop talking about Michelle Obamas arms? How they think it means she's 'strong-arming' her husband? how she's gonna win the arms race? how she's giving American women the right to bare arms? well, the arms themselves have decided to enter the fray of bad puns and semiotic limb deconstruction with a blog of their own. First Guns is a hilarious look at our cultural preoccupation with the First Lady's guns, in said guns' own words. From ... Read More

It's a Very Very Sad World

BY debbie in Music

The world seems a bit too harsh for us lately, what with the news filled with the troubling economy plus tragic celebrity deaths. But sometimes sadness can result in beauty. The below video pretty much sums up our feelings today. Bonus points to anyone who can tell us where in NYC this looks like it was ... Read More
This past week, I got to do one of the most fun things ever: Teach Mo Rocca to knit. Mo got himself into some hot water with the knitting community a few weeks ago (yes, there is such a thing as a 'knitting community,') when he made the horrifying 'joke' on NPR's Wait Wait..Don't Tell Me that 'I hate handknit sweaters. Handknit sweaters are always itchy.' The remark caused an uproar on knitting blogs and community sites, and Mo heard all about it. So, on the ... Read More
I'll admit: I don't really get modern art. And I especially don't get Heide Hatry's art. Hatry is an artist who sculpts using clay and raw meat. In one series, Meat after Meat Joy (Meat Joy was a 1964 performance piece and I really don't get the art of performance art), Hatry created an American flag out of meat, complete with maggots. Okay, fine, it lacks subtlety, but let's assume she was going for a blunt and shocking political statement. Heads and Tales , her ... Read More
