I love New York. I’ve lived here my whole life, and wouldn’t trade a minute of it for anything. That being said, there’s a lot about growing up in a big city, especially for a young woman, that’s not so great. I’m thinking particularly of street harassment—it’s something that I, along with countless others around the world, have had to deal with almost every day from a very young age.
Some of my friends yell at their cat-callers, some spit at their feet. I, on the other hand, am not as inclined to such boldness. No matter how many times I’ve been hollered at in the past, it always catches me off-guard. It happens so fast, and when the perpetrator is walking in the opposite direction, it’s impossible to process what just happened, collect my thoughts and come up with an appropriate response in time.
Luckily for me (and other girls who want so badly to tell their harassers what’s what but can’t seem to verbalize their anguish), there’s Cards Against Harassment.
Cards Against Harassment has created a set of twenty free, printable cards that you can give to any and all creepy guys. They come in four languages, and each one offers an appropriately sarcastic and biting response and ends with a simple “keep it to yourself.” Whether you’re being looked at like a piece of meat or being shamed for eating one, these cards will be there to put those weirdos in their place so you don’t have to waste your breath.
Now, responding to harassment can be as easy as handing someone a piece of paper. Actually being harassed, still pretty damn hard.
