Yesterday, the infamous Glass Ceiling got a another pretty big crack in it: Shannon Eastin is the first woman ever to referee a National Football League game. Touchdown! Last night, 42-year-old Eastin presided over the game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Diego Chargers. It was pretty great to see a woman in the traditionally masculine black-and-white uniform. Eastin, previously a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference referee crew chief, has over 17 years of experience including high school games. So what pushed Eastin through the doors...
Belgian songstress Selah Sue may look like a model with her golden nest of hair, but she has powerful pipes and true talent. Her self-titled debut offers her distinctive take on smooth soul laced with tropical reggae beats; the album is filled with reckless rapture and fiery attitude. “I’m feeling real passionate,” Sue howls in “This World,” an explosive ballad that might inspire you to caress a glass of Jamaican rum. “Raggamuffin” is a sweet and spicy jam with delicate guitar plucks and lush, brassy...
Masked under hair and everyday objects, is Mitsuko Nagone. But Nagone isn’t just playing hide-and-seek for fun (although it might appear that way). Her self-portrait series, “I Am More Than My Face,” seeks to underscore the dysmorphia of the media generating our identities.  "With this project, I intend to create myself, instead of finding my identity," Nagone states. "People often ask themselves, 'Who am I?' However...the definition of who they are could limit their own possibilities and the infinity of their essences. I believe that the self should...
Famously peeved funny lady Joan Rivers has a new source for her unbridled (and often hysterical) ire. This time, it’s the wholesale super store Costco that's under fire. What did the bulk supplier do to make the queen of mean so darn mad?  They’re not selling her book, I Hate Everyone...Starting with Me, due to some “offensive” content. Shame on you Los Angeles Costco! How dare you? The 79-year-old badass (who talks about her book in our latest August/September issue) handcuffed herself to a shopping...
Comedian Mike Birbiglia sure knows how to make people want to see a movie: by telling them they’re going to hate it.  Oh wait, he actually just went “over board” and you’ll probably love his new comedy Sleepwalk With Me. The "heartfelt comedy" will be especially great if it has half the wit and charisma of the Vulture exclusive short that debuted today. Our current Boy Du Jour, Birbiglia, and his co-writer Ira Glass (from This American Life)  know how hard it is to take an indie film...
