With bacon jam appearing on restaurant menus and artisan pickles piled high at farmer’s markets, it’s clear that canning has made a comeback. It’s a great way to enjoy your favorite fresh produce all year long; it’ll stay shelf-stable and botulism-free, as long as you follow the directions carefully. If you’ve wanted to try “putting up”—the old-timey term for preserving at home—but didn’t know where to start, kick things off with water-bath canning; it works for foods with a high acidity level, like tomatoes and...
Fall means one thing to me: New Girl is back on FOX! I’ve been waiting all summer to see what’s up with my favorite manic-pixie-nightmare-girl, Jessica Day (played by former BUST cover girl Zooey Deschanel). Turns out, she hasn't been up at all. The premiere began with Jess oversleeping, in typical Jess-blunder fashion, and subsequently running through the apartment attempting to get ready for work.  Then we had the pleasure of hearing Nick sing a bang-up rendition of “Groove is in the Heart,” seeing Winston...
This weekend at the BUST Magazine Craftacular, you can stock up on awesome pop culture accessories from two lovely ladies named Nicole.   Nicole Krecicki strives to create social change through wearable art. Her apparel line, Rainbow Alternative, includes T-shirts, baby clothes, ties, and pins with LGBT pride slogans and pop culture references.  All designs are hand-stenciled and spray-painted by Nicole, which means each item is one-of-a-kind. I love her “Yes, Really” T-shirt and The Nightmare Before Christmas ties.   You can find Rainbow Alternative designs on Nicole’s Etsy shop or at...
Daniel Barnz directs this narrative sister to the school-reform doc Waiting for Superman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis as two Pittsburgh mothers who want to fix their kids’ failing elementary school. Gyllenhaal plays an Erin Brockovich-like character with tattoos, heels, and an “I’m not an activist, I’m just a mom working two jobs” mentality. Her daughter is dyslexic, but neither her child’s tenured teacher nor the administration offer any help. So she turns to another teacher at the school (Viola Davis) who also...
Eve Ensler is a total rock star. See? She’s best known for writing and starring in the groundbreaking play The Vagina Monologues—heck, even your grandparents have probably heard of it. Not being one to rest on her laurels, she founded a nonprofit, V-Day, that combats the epidemic (and yes, folks, it is an epidemic) of sexual and domestic violence happening all around the world. V-Day activists have opened hospitals for abuse survivors in the Democratic Republic of Congo, safe houses in Haiti, and created activist networks everywhere from...
