Almost 15 years after his award-winning breakthrough film, La Ciudad, writer/director David Riker once again examines the lives of undocumented immigrants, this time from an unusual point of view: that of a poor, white, single mother. Ashley (Abbie Cornish) is desperate to win back custody of her young son, who is in foster care.

Almanac, the second full-length from Brooklyn band Widowspeak, opens with cascading guitar lines you could listen to on loop all night long. Molly Hamilton’s waifish vocals float down between the heavy drums, getting listeners primed for more, more, more. Still drawing a striking resemblance to beloved ’90s legends Mazzy Star, Widowspeak seems to be venturing out from under that shadow. The guitars, courtesy of Robert Earl Thomas, are more aggressive, even launching into solos on songs like “The Dark Age.

This week, in a spectacularly well-timed episode, RuPaul's Drag Race was all about lip synching—both the normal kind, and the kind where you lip synch to spoken dialogue, like dubbing a movie in reverse. If you thought, "Ru made that up—no one does that," then join me in being wrong, because he also told us about performance artist Lypsinka, whose act consists of lip synching to audio clips of people like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. The more you know! Now join me in falling into a Lypsinka YouTube k-hole.

Vegetarian meat is a divisive issue. It gets crap from omnivores because it doesn’t taste like “the real thing,” and purists in the veggie camp often claim to be grossed out by the concept of soy masquerading as animal flesh. But for many compassionate cooks, vegan versions of burgers, chicken, and even seafood are lifesavers when the hankering for comfort food rears its hungry head – especially in wintertime.  Animal rights activists Annie and Dan Shannon know these urges all too well.

Talk about double standards. A New Jersey school is implementing a "no cursing" rule for their students, but only for the female students. Girls at Queen of Peace High School, a catholic school in Arlington NJ, have been asked to take a pledge to clean up their language. The boys were asked not to curse around the ladies, but not asked to stop their cursing all together. The real head shaker in this is that Lori Flynn, the teacher who started this pledge, does not see it as a double standard.

MS MR have just released their first official music video! The video is for their latest track, “Fantasy”, off their upcoming album Second Hand Rapture, which will be available on May 14th. The video was shot is Jamaica, Queens, and features a slew of fractured fantasies being played out—dismembered hands, cheerleaders puking glitter, drum flash mobs, the works.  The duo behind MS MR is Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow, who played sold-out shows in NYC and LA this year. You’ll also be able to catch them at the upcoming SXSW festival.

It's been an uphill battle for gays and lesbians to get marriage equality laws passed. Even once they get the license, elements of a traditional wedding, like getting a cake, might not be easy either. Recently, Sweet Cakes Bakery, based in Oregon, is facing legal action for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. In the filing, the couple had no problem buying other cakes from Sweet Cakes but when it came to their wedding cake owner Aaron Klein said "no." He says he has no problem with talking to or selling things to gay people but he just won't support their marriage.

Dear Beyonce, First you killed it at the inauguration with your unbelievable rendition of the National Anthem, when you ripped your earpiece out like the true diva that you are.  Then we found out that you sang to a pre-recorded track.  Don’t worry, we had your back, we know it was cold outside! Then you sang it again, acapella, at a Super Bowl Press Conference that you held and now you've blown us away with the half time show at the Super Bowl last night.  Listen, we don’t care if you lip-synch, we honestly don’t care WHAT you do.

This morning, a funeral was held for former mayor Ed Koch, who passed away last Friday.  Mayor Bloomberg, Former President Bill Clinton, Christine Quinn, and Rudolf Giuliani were among the many people who spoke, and thousands of others gathered at the Temple Emanu-El on the East Side of Manhattan to pay their respects.  He was the 105th Mayor on New York City, serving from Jan. 1, 1978, to Dec. 31, 1989, when New York was filled with graffiti, crime, and was considered much more dangerous than it is today.
