Yesterday, officials gave protesters near the Dakota Access Pipeline an evacuation deadline of 2 P.M. While most demonstrators chose to leave, ten refused and were subsequently arrested, waving flags as they exited. An estimated 25-50 people still remained at the Oceti Sakowin camp this morning. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum told CNN that the remaining protesters will be given the same warning: leave peacefully or face arrest. The evacuation comes after President Trump ordered to allow Energy Transfer Partners to continue construction of the pipeline, to the dismay...
Neuroscientist-turned-designer Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya is tired of the notion that the sciences are male-dominated fields. There are hundreds of female scientists whose work is integral to contemporary scientific innovation — take, for example, Marie Curie, the two-time Nobel Laureate whose work enabled the discovery of radioactivity — but these women often go unrecognized. Phingbodhipakkia’s project and graphic poster series Beyond Curie aims to change that. In an interview with Fast Company, Phingbodhipakkiya stated, “There’s such a rich history of women kicking ass in science, and very few people...

The problem here, though, is that Gibson’s career isn’t recovering from a string of bad rom coms or a shoplifting charge — instead, he has a long track record of racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic statements, plus domestic violence charges that he plead no contest to. In an industry that constantly celebrates white male alleged abusers from Roman Polanski to Woody Allen to Casey Affleck (black men like Nate Parker...
“Kitten Lady” Hannah Shaw Rescues Orphans The Shelters Won’t Take Hannah Shaw never planned on becoming a professional kitten rescuer. But she also never dreamed she’d stumble across a tiny, mewling orphan stuck in a tree. “I thought surely there was someone who would help this kitten,” Shaw, 29—aka “Kitten Lady”—says of the discovery she made in Philadelphia in 2008. “But I learned that nobody was going to help this kitten unless I helped this kitten.” Most super-young kittens like the one Shaw saved—who grew up into...
