So it's that time of year again. Out with the exposed underbutt and in with pumpkin-infused everything and my favorite textile of all time: leather. With a legacy of hollywood's ass-kicking, catsuit-clad babes behind you, leather has the capacity to transform even the most feminine shapes into pieces that say "I know you want to, but don't even try" (and by leather I am also including pleather and latex because saving money and cows is cool. Also: shiiiiiiiny). Now I know the debated question of whether women really can...
In an effort to halt the "hypersexualization" of  young girls, the French upper house has voted to pass a proposal that would outlaw beauty contests for girls under 16, with penalties for breaking the law ranging from fines to jail time. The ban would put an end to events like France's Mini Miss contest, which, much like our own Toddler's and Tiaras, even has its own reality TV series.   (Although, from the images on the show's website, this particular contest seems to be more guilty of...
The inherent excellence of miniaturized items cannot be denied (by me). From tiny gummy hamburgers to model cars/planes/cities to handbag-sized dogs, there is something tiny out there to evoke irrational delight in everyone. Over at the Twig Terrariums, talented creators Michelle Inciarrano and Katy Maslow take things a step further by creating adorable, glass-encased ecosystems and sending tiny figurines on adventures inside them. Just too cute. They remind me of artist Slinkachu's famous "little people" collection placed in a dynamic, living setting.    Twig began on a...
The Queen of Rock & Roll herself – Stevie Nicks – praised Queen Bey this past Sunday saying, “Beyoncé’s great. She’s got her alter ego [Sasha Fierce], but Beyoncé the girl, the woman, is very sweet and nice and polite. She’s a good role model. She’s not skanky. I’m glad we have her.” Nicks originally met Beyoncé in 2001 during the recording of the pop anthem and (more importantly) theme song to my life, Bootylicious.  The song samples Nicks’ 1981 hit, Edge of...
Here at BUST, “isms” hold a prominent place in my daily mental landscape. Feminism is the reason I’ve shown up to work (relatively) bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the last 12 years. And while I always put that particular ism at the forefront of everything I do, my opposition to other entrenched social isms, like racism, classism, and sizeism also plays a significant role in how I perceive and report on the world. It wasn’t until I went vegan four years ago, however, that my consciousness...
