Yesterday, Gossip released an online teaser from their upcoming album MUSIC FOR MEN (produced by Rick Rubin). While you have to wait all the way until October 6th for the album to come out, you can stream the first single, 'Heavy Cross' off of their myspace page. Beth Ditto (Bust cover DEC/JAN 2008) rocks hard as hell and MUSIC FOR MEN will be worth watching out for.
Today is Equal Pay Day, but don't start celebrating just yet. After decades and decades of working toward a pay system that makes sense and doesn't short women, we're still not there. This day is actually a reminder of that: It takes place on a Tuesday every April to remind everyone that, in the United States, it takes a woman six working days on average to make what a man makes in five--a woman would have to work until Tuesday to make what a man had made by Friday.
It's human nature to want to share our stories, and every culture has done it in some form or other throughout the ages--from cave painters to street artists, from town criers to novelists to the bloggers here at BUST! And when a story is told, both the teller and the listener learn something. That's why I'm a huge fan of StoryCorps, NPR's nonprofit project that has been encouraging people to interview each other since 2003, with its mini-recording studio in New York and it's MobileBooths that travel across the country collecting stories.
Amy Reeder Hadley is the artist on DC/Vertigo Comics' monthly book Madame Xanadu, one of the few titles in the line focused on a female lead character. Madame Xanadu moves through history, using magic to insinuate herself into various events familiar and strange. She has run-ins with everyone from Merlin to Marie Antoinette, and even has a showdown of sorts with everyone's favorite Vertigo character, Death. Hadley was just nominated for her first Eisner award (the comics Oscars) and took the time to talk to BUST about Madame Xanadu, comics, and drawing Death.
Here at BUST HQ we are working our butts off for the Spring Fling Craftacular happening on May 17th. And girl, we need help! If you are interested in helping with the event, and interning in the office itself with the sales and marketing team, then do not hesitate to send me an email. Requirements: proficient in MS word, Excel, most MS office applications and familiar with blog platforms. Huge bonus if you are proficient in Adobe CS programs as well, but not necessary. You must have your own laptop. The work will be assisting sales and marketing with event coordination and day-of grunt work.
Women and friends of women around the globe have been avidly following the news regarding a new Afghan law that grants Shi'ite men the right to demand intercourse from their wives, effectively legalizing marital rape. Today there are signs of hope for Shia women. President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai (pictured above in imaginary festive-feminist attire,) announced today that 'the law is now up for review and amendments will take place.' Karzai did not elaborate on the particulars of the revisions (hence the tentative nature of the HUZZAH.
