My awesome auntie-in-law, a supertalented subway singer named Rosateresa Castro-Vargas, is the subject of a short film that is now in the running to be shown on Reel 13 on PBS this Saturday! I found the inauguration to be inspiring, uplifting, and overall unforgettable. A lot of bars in my area will be rerunning it tonight and I can't wait to go out and experience the excitement all over again with friends. But even though every speech and performance was no doubt incredible, I have to admit that I was most excited by Aretha Franklin's hat. She rocks my world.
Tonight I thought of Lorraine Hansberry, author of 'A Raisin in the Sun' and songstress, Nina Simone.  Simone co-wrote the song and tribute to Hansberry and the Civil Rights movement 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black.

We all know that there is a huge amount of alterations made to most of the images we see of women celebrities in magazines and ad campaigns. It's all behind the scenes and pretty damn creepy if you ask me. I love how this inspired a group of grafitti artists in Berlin (FTW-Crew) to actually paste the photoshop tool bars next to posters of current pop icons and shed some light on one of advertising's greatest myths: what you see is what you get.
