My favorite girlie-punk twins, Eagle and Talon, release In Manila on February 22nd.    After my ipod favorite, Thracian, the girls are back. AND joined by Mr. Reggie Watts. There's the same alt sweetness - a somehow optimistic and eerie style that keeps you dancing in your underpants.  This is what we expect from Eagle and Talon.  In Manila brings new riffs and crazy melodies - it's fresh and delicious. Go to their Kickstarter. For 5 bucks you can download their new EP In Manila. Read More

MILEY CY-brrrr

BY Bette Bentley in General

I give Miley Cyrus a free pass on pretty much anything she does.  I mean, her pink sleeping bags out-sell Pace Picante sauce at Fiesta super markets.  Because her metallic face is emblazoned across the polyester-fill.  I've slept in one. They smell like Malaysian cupcakes and treason.  I like that.  Warm? No. Impressive? Yes.   I also enjoy the song about the USA/partying. It reminds me of simple religious conservatism. A mystical land... Read More

MERMAID JEWELRY

BY Bette Bentley in Style

When I was a little girl, my parents bribed me with the Little Mermaid on VHS as a materialistic means of getting me to stop biting my fingernail to the nubs.  I stopped. I watched.   I guess I'm going through another mermaid phase.  Growing my hair out.  Wearing flowy clothes.  ANYWAY, while in Houston visiting my family I stumbled upon an amazing up-and-coming jewelry designer - Christina Miller. Her pieces are incredible.  All about stones and draping. Read More

Huxley on Huxley

BY Bette Bentley in Feminism

Wow. The Tribeca Film Festival is over – OK it was over May 2nd.  Just now catching my breath.    As an Artist Liaison for the festival, I get to see loads of films.  Some glorious—like the narrative “Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll” or  the doc “The Other City” (check em' kids). Some stinky films—lips sealed (and not in the H.Duff-duet fashion, really sealed).  In film news, the best documentary I’ve seen this year wasn’t at TFF. Read More

DEADLY DELIVERY

BY Bette Bentley in Feminism

Every minute one woman dies as a consequence of complications during birth or pregnancy. That's more than 500,000 women a year, 1 woman every minute of every day. These women do not die of diseases that can't be treated or complications that can't be prevented. They die because societies have yet to determine that their lives are worth saving. 1 out of 8 women in Sierra Leone die as a result of this! The United States is also facing this maternal health crisis. Two to three women die of pregnancy-related complications every day. Read More
For the past couple months, I have lived and breathed the BUST Holiday Craftacular.  Helping our fearless leader, the adorable-blue-eyed-badass to my left, with vendor maps, spreadsheets, and everything she needs. During the back-end process, I came across many-a-crafter.  BUT I must say, one of the crafters I am most excited about is Lillian Crowe (table 127).  Her beautiful, brass bone and gut necklaces are my dream come true.  Not to get too deep on ya, but I am a published poet. Because Crafters ROCK

BY Bette Bentley in DIY

AND because my throbbing blueballs hurt for this Sunday (the annual BUST Holiday Craftacular in NYC. DUH). These  blueballs can only be satisfied by sneaking online.  There, I look at a plethora of indie, handmade ware in the privacy of a dark bedroom.  Sweet relief. Until Sunday, at least, when I get to go all the way.  One of the crafters that really gets me going is Ink and Wit.  Her prints, notecards, and invitations are simply beautiful.  I can't wait to stalk her booth and buyout the whole holiday card series. I mean, polar bears AND penguins. Yes, please. Read More
