Two of my favorite artists are in a show together opening Thursday night in NYC, the lovely Melissa Auf der Mar (former bassist of Hole) and Conrad Keely from ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. Melissa is showing her photography, and Conrad his ballpoint pen drawings. Should be an excellent exhibit....

Lola, the hit of the Los Angeles underground art scene, will be presenting her first solo show at Corey Helford Gallery. Starting as a tattoo artist, Lola built up her first collections between customers. Her newest exhibit, called 'The Wondermental,' tells the story of a young boy's journey into the unknown, with each painting serving as one piece of the narrative. Her paintings blend delicate imagery with the surreal, lending the collection a dark yet charming tone. The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 25 and runs until...

The iconic cult film star and raven haired vixen Tura Santana will be at the opening of the Tattoo Factory Gallery in Chicago on October 30th. They will also be screening her most well known film 'Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!' Tura spent most of her childhood growing up in Chicago, so this opening hits close to home. The event is taking place on October 30th from 7 to 11pm on 4443 N. Broadway. The night before on the 29th at the Music Box Theatre on 3733...

Autumn and Jerry de Wilde, whose combined careers span from the 60's to the present, are well known for capturing iconic images of influential artists and events. Their shared exhibit "Autumn de Wilde & Jerry de Wilde: Two Generations of Counterculture Photography" opens on October 17 at the Morrison Hotel Gallery's Soho Loft, and will feature a selection of 50 photos by the father/daughter duo. That's twice the awesome in one night! Jerry de Wilde's photography traced the Counterculture of the late 60's into the...

YOUNITY is having an opening for their new exhibition Heart and Soul! YOUNITY is a womens art collective focused on creating a forum for female voices in the art world. The organization was founded by artists Alice Mizrachi and Toofly in 2007 as a reaction to the under representation of female artists. They also serve to mentor young artists and create a community that they can thrive in. Their second annual YOUNITY Arts Exhibit: Heart and Soul is happening on October 17th at Alphabetta (Greenpoint...

Guest of Cindy Sherman is a compelling documentary about a guy who falls in love with the most influential female art star of our time, Cindy Sherman, and gets lost in the relationship. It's about art fame and the seeming inadequacy of being the 'plus 1.'  Paul H-O has made both a touching boyfriend movie, and a scathing portrayal of the art world, with great footage from the 90's art scene.        I think like alot of people, myself included, H-O has a love/hate...

The second volume of P.L.A.I.N. Janes from Minx hit stores this week, along with the sad news that the Minx imprint will cease publication in January. The second Janes book is as much fun as the first, with the sassy high school girls creating unauthorized art around their small town. This time, things are complicated by crushes, with each Jane having her (or his) own love troubles. Despite boy issues, though, Main Jane's goal is still to make art, and it is that goal that drives...

Photographer Jill Greenberg has gotten herself into a real shit storm since she posted some doctored images of McCain on her website a few weeks ago. She was hired by The Atlantic Monthly to shoot him, and not long afterward got creative with the photoshop, including a version with bloody fangs and even one with a monkey pooping on Mccains head(!) It all seems a little extreme to me, not to mention damaging to her career. (Apparently her agent dropped her like a...

I finally put up some of the pictures from the opening reception of Swoon 's Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea. The performance is over but the installation is still up until October at Deitch Projects. Her wheatpastes are breathtaking and the boats are amazing. The magic is really in the details so you really need to inspect the works up close. I put the flicks on flickr so you could make them larger but you really need to see this in person to take all...

Local changed how I viewed comics. I started reading this book about three years ago, with the first issue. I've been a comics junkie for years now, but Local was something different. It read like a short film, and its single-issue size made it feel like a perfect indie rock song. Now all twelve issues have been collected into a beautiful, oversize hardcover, complete with backmatter from the originals and extra art to boot. It's more a mixtape than a movie, a series of significant moments...
