"Renata Borgatti, Au Piano" by Romaine Brooks, 1920. She was a classical musician and one of Rosmaine Brooks's lovers.  1920s Paris. Bohemian, artistic, full of expatriates and very, very queer. However, the history of queer expatriate women in France has been lost throughout the ages with all of the praise given Picasso, Matisse, and Dalí — just to name a few.  In a new exhibition, the Smithsonian American Art Museum has brought one of those forgotten figures of queer bohemia, and her beautiful portraits, back to our...

What do you personally do to bring down the oppressive system of patriarchy? This is the question I posed to the attendees of the Twin Oaks Women's Gathering this August. As the voices of the women photographed reveal, there are infinite answers! 25 original ways to smash patriarchy are pictured here. The Women's Gathering is a DIY, non-corporate campout that welcomes women (in the broadest definition) from the East Coast region and beyond. It has been organized and hosted by Twin Oaks, an egalitarian intentional community in...

Stefanie (Week 45) Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec, both informational designers, decided to visualize data from their daily lives in the form of hand drawn postcards. At the time, Lupi was living in New York City and Posavec in London. As the pair corresponded for a year, forming a unique relationship based in art and data. These postcards are tiny maps of emotion, and as each artist draws out their life in new clusters and graphs, you see how their creative companionship blossoms. Each detail, from complaints...

The 15th annual photo issue puts together 38 compelling artists that depict diverse narratives from all over the world with such a compassionate touch, that it challenges the way we see our globe. It's an intimate and provocative 184-page celebration of art created solely by women. VICE'S photo editor Elizabeth Renstrom writes in the opening letter that women in the art field are certainly not a new phenomenon."Women have been fundamental to the art...

Consent by Jess De Wahls British artist Fionn Willson has curated a new exhibit on sexuality and sensuality in the female self-portraiture. Self Portrait: Dark by Sookie Sirene “My Sex, My Self” is comprised of 14 women artists, all hailing from the UK. Wilson’s intention is to create “an exuberant and honest celebration and examination of ourselves as sexual beings, in a world where the expression of sexuality as a woman can still be seen as controversial, threatening or even subversive,” she explains. Hunger by Fionn Wilson With this awesome...

These paintings and drawings are everything you need for your Tuesday—they are curvy, fierce, and enchanting. Here at BUST we are committed to providing art that features all different sizes and shapes. In his "pinups" series, Blake Eason, a mixed-media artist, challenges our perceptions of beauty by creating glamorous and seductive mermaids and fairies. Eason discussed his artistic inspiration with BUST: “One of the main reason is that I get tired of seeing the same figures being used in various genres of art. Something I'm sure that...

from New York Young, "New York Young, No. 9" (Rolleiflex) In the second installment of Lady Shooters, our series focusing on women photographers, Tara Wray interviews Amy Touchette. “There was very little I needed to hear when I started out that I didn’t feel in my gut. Mortality is the ultimate teacher, and even though I was feeling my way in the dark, I somehow instinctively knew the real from the bullshit.” — Amy Touchette I really love your image "New York Young, No. 9" (top). Can you...

Yoko Ono is calling upon women from all over the world to participate in a performance art project about gender violence. On September 6th, the artist issued an invitation for women to send in their personal testaments, as well as photographs of their eyes. The project is open to women of all languages, ages, and nationalities — the only stipulation is that no participant sign their full name. The accounts will be used in the installation, which will debut at the Reykjavik Art Museum on...

We have exclusive photos of your favorite male celebrities posing in striking, fun, and very un-masculine ways. The new book Red-Blooded American Male, by Emmy Award-winning photographer Robert Trachtenberg, has 100 delicious and surprisingly... sexy photos of male celebrities. From Judd Apatow to Neil Patrick Harris, Trachtenberg features male celebrities' vulnerable and softer sides by photographing them in traditionally female poses. Instead of usual photos of stoic faces and flexed muscles; it has nude, quirky, and emotion-filled photographs. One of my favorites presents the cast of Jackass...

When it comes to the big leagues of socio-political photojournalism, there are a select handful of artists whose photographs have sparked a revolution. Although you may not have heard of Nick Ut and Dorothea Lange by name, their photographs of children fleeing a napalm attack and a mother living during the great depression respectively have stayed with our society for decades. An up-and-coming photographer, Yana Mazurkevich, has the same passion for capturing the trauma of human destruction. This college junior is the creative mastermind behind...
