Hornet Signs, a Waco Texas based printing company, should probably start looking for a new advertising director. As a promotion for their products, the company printed a decal that featured a woman, bound and tied, curled up in the bed of a pick up truck. The image of a blonde woman in jeans, her hands bound and tied, hair obscuring her face, was placed on the back of a Hornet employee’s pick up truck to showcase how realistic the company’s signs look. After seeing the decal, multiple residents phoned the police, fearful for the woman’s well being. Read More
I have to be honest: I’ve never been a big music video watcher. Even as a 90’s kid, I saw all the quintessential Britney and Backstreet Boys videos maybe once or twice. And once MTV started playing trashy reality shows and stopped playing actual music videos? Fuhgeddaboudit. But sometimes a video comes along that is so surprising, so intriguing, and so completely bizarre that you have to take a step back and really truly ask yourself “What the hell did I just watch?!” After four back-to-back viewings, I’m still not entirely sure. There’s no disputing the fact that the airbrushed and photoshopped images of models in fashion magazines can warp and dismantle a young girl’s self-esteem. Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue, wants to clarify that the photos of models on the pages of her magazine are not realistic representations of women. That's why Shulman is releasing a ten-minute video detailing what actually goes on at a Vogue fashion shoot—hours of make up application, lighting design, and, of course, the extensive computer-based editing that followers.   These days, celebrity sex tapes pop up all over with a surprising amount of ease. Topless (and bottomless, as was the case with a certain N.Y.C. mayoral candidate) photos can be found leaked all over Twitter, sending the Internet into a frenzy. Videos can cause even more of a stir. Some people have even turned the release of their more, er, intimate moments into an empire. I’m looking at you, Kim Kardashian. But a sex tape that gives the viewer important information about an international crisis? That’s something downright novel. Read More
Trigger Warning: This post contains a description of sexual assault that may be triggering for survivors. A British man named Richard Thomas was just sentenced to five years and four months in prison for raping a woman while she slept. But that wasn’t the only consequence of his actions. A BBC news article reports that Thomas reportedly collapsed when the police informed him that he might have contracted HIV from his victim. Read More

As a follow-up to the blog yesterday about Samantha Orobator, the British woman who became pregnant while incarcerated in Laos on drug trafficking charges, is escaping 'death by firing squad.' Whew! Like I said yesterday , I don't know if she was raped in prison or tried to get pregnant on purpose to spare her life, but it has worked. Orobator's trial in Laos will likely take place sometime next week. --Regina links: cnn. Read More

Annabel Alpers - New Zealand's one-woman-and-her-computer act Bachelorette - is about to release her third record, My Electric Family. The album nicely lives up to the description that Alpers gives for herself on Bachelorette's MySpace page - it is indeed like she ''took too many mushrooms and fell in love with a computer.'' The opening guitars of the first track, ''Instructions for Insomniacs'' have a repetitive, almost hypnotic sound to them. Read More
