Pictures of Tracey

BY Team Intern in General

Earlier this morning I stumbled across (thank you slide show on the New York Magazine website) the insanely intimate photographs of the late Tracey Baran, whose autobiographical images feel like snapshots taken from passages in her diary. Baran, who sadly passed away last year at the age of 33, captured images of her own family, boyfriends, and herself in a manner that is quite revelatory. Images of her parents, which could have come off as comical, are tender and ... Read More
Taffeta and neon and spandex, oh my! As promised, the New York Couture Fashion Show blew the roof off Webster Hall this Saturday, and BUST was there to watch (like the proud sponsors we are!). The clothes were incredible, the crowd was HUGE, and the performance by L.A.'s Ultraviolet Sound was rad beyond reason. Hope some BUSTies got in on the OCD (obsessive compulsive dancing: see Ultraviolet Sound's sickest sensation of the night). If not: sad face. But ... Read More

BEST ZINE NAME EVER!

BY Team Intern in General

Fallopian Falafel, a non-profit Jerusalem-based feminist zine that started in May 2007 (whew!), made its way into my hands today. I must give a shout out to Hadass S. Ben-Ari, the editor-in-chief, for sending her zine our way for this has to be the best piece of BUST mail that I have laid my hands on. With each issue focusing on a different topic, this zine is filled to the brim with feminist thought, poetry, imagery, song lyrics and autobiographical essays that ... Read More
In case you ever doubted it, here's some proof that Mary J's still got it. Have you seen her latest video 'The One' featuring guy of the moment Drake? It's pretty much the flyest shiz on MTV right now. Seriously, has any video ever made you want to rock out in a neon-filled, mirror-lined warehouse club this much? Yeah, Mary J's definitely the one. Not only is she the queen of hip-hop soul, but she's pretty great at accessorizing -- where does she ... Read More

Remembering 9/11

BY Team Intern in General

It's been 8 years since the catastrophic morning that shook America, and the rest of the world, in so many ways. But, even as we move forward, BUST is holding tight to the memories of loved ones, friends, co-workers, and incredible rescue workers lost or injured that day. We remember today for its immense sadness, but also for the overwhelming heroism and compassion demonstrated by everyday people. Let's keep that spirit alive, and keep everyone lost that day ... The New York Times does it again! Just a couple short weeks after their girl-tastic issue of the NYT Magazine, yesterday they ran an article about the surprisingly large presence of female directors at this year's Toronto Film Festival. In addition to a 'raucous' premiere of BUST cover girl Diablo Cody's gorefest Jennifer's Body (directed by Karyn Kusama), the festival also held screenings of Jane Campion's new film Bright Star and Danish director Lone Scherfig's ... Rasputina this Sunday

BY Laurie in General

One of our favorite bands of all time, Rasputina --the (sometimes) all girl cello band, natch-- is playing a one off show at the Knitting Factory. Melora is preggers with her second child, and there is a fun interview with her here at Blackbook . Choice quote: 'I’m also going to make a three-song CD with ancient folk songs about female cross-dressers. Girls dressed as men.' Fun fact: Did you know that Melora once toured with Nirvana playing ... Read More
As of yesterday, an advisory panel to the FDA recommended that the all-powerful government agency approve Gardasil for use in boys -- good news for all, as now it's no longer just up to us girls to protect both ourselves and our partners from HPV. But there's still no answer to the big question: will the vaccine ever be mandatory for school attendance? When it was just for young women, the discussion always focused on how we'd all end up sluttier since we wouldn't ... Read More

Beatnik Babe

BY intern Amber in General

If you love Amber Tamblyn (our Feb/Mar 09 cover girl) you will adore her even more when you pick up her new enthralling poetry book Bang Ditto, published by Manic D Press. Her work is smart, twisted, feminist and humorous. She lays out her heart and soul for you to touch and smell through the pages. Amber summarizes that Bang Ditto is 'a collection of poetry and prose chronicling my observations of a life spent in the Hollywood business and how that's effected ... Read More
