Ruffeo Hearts +Mo Rocca!

BY Laurie in Crafty

Check out this clip that includes two of my favorite things, rad hand made stuff and Mr. MO ROCCA! Mo had to learn how to make his own hoodie for this feature on Etsy and the handmade explosion so he went to the studio of the adorable Ruffeo Hearts lil Snotty proprietor Mackswell who showed him the ropes. Come meet Mackswell and Sarah at their booth next Sunday at the BUST Spring Fling Craftacular in Brooklyn May 17th, 12-7pm. To view all the vendors, click ... Read More
I try to refer to what I've heard some say is 'the Bible for New Yorkers' when I can: Time Out New York, of course, for updates on restaurants, bars and whasss happenin' in each 'hood. Gotta love the mag for its equality, too. They are celebrating 'Urban Bear Weekend' (May 7-13), on their website (click on the 'Gay' tab if you don't know what a bear is!) with pics and info on some local NYC bears. Meet Rich (pictured), my BBF (as in Best Bear-Friend), among ... Read More
Celebrate! The day began in 1992 when Mary Evans Young, a British feminist, decided something needed to be done about eating disorders and the huge diet industry. The point is to raise awareness of fat-phobia and size discrimination; fight the idea of the ''right'' or ''ideal'' body shape; fight the diet industry; and honor the victims of eating disorders and weight loss surgery. The blog Body Love Wellness has a post listing 16 reasons not to diet (ever). ... Read More

Rape IS Serious

BY Web Intern in Feminizzle

We all know that the way the criminal system deals with rape is inadequate, to say the least. But Nicholas Kristof's 'Is Rape Serious?' op-ed in The New York Times on April 29 opened my eyes to just how dismal the situation really is--and to the fact that we need to do something about it. When a woman reports a rape, she usually submits to an extensive examination, an ordeal Kristof describes like this: 'She is typically asked to undress over a large sheet ... Read More
My work computer crapped out on me Friday. I've been trying to get my internet life back together ever since. I'm not the most tech savvy lady so I'm getting a little grumpy. Whenever things start blowing hard I think of this little Whitney ditty: My other fav after the jump: The very first scene of the very first ... Read More

Cute Band Alert

BY Lisa in Music Stuff

I got your new awesome album right here. Cryptacize hails from Oakland, CA (fans of Deerhoof will recognize guitarist Chris Cohen) and I've been jamming out to their new record, Mythomania, since it came out a couple weeks ago. Its melodies are addictive (like Nedelle Torrisi's vocals) and moments of endearing twee and weirdness shine through the slow-synth jams and catchy, rockin'-pop hooks. They're hittin' the road next week so click through to see if they're ... Read More
Former SNL (and BUST cover, above) funny lady Amy Poehler will be awarded this year's Dove Real Beauty Award at the 34th Annual AWRT Gracie Awards. AWRT (American Women in Radio and Televison) and Dove, partnered since 2004, 'created the Dove Real Beauty Award to honor an individual who best embodies and expresses the 'substance and spirit' of real beauty through her life and career.' AWRT President Maria Brennan said, 'We are excited...Amy Poehler is an ideal ... Read More

Deradoorian EP

BY Laurie in General

Deradoorian Mind Raft Lovepump United While ostensibly a record made 'for you to do drugs to, or something,' Mind Raft, the debut EP from Dirty Projectors singer/bassist Angel Deradoorian, comes across just as easily as a study in deliberate deconstruction. Deradoorian, who uses only her surname as her solo moniker, diffuses the occasional New Age tang by singing with a slightly more mannered, downward-spiraling inflection here than we're used to, creating a ... As a follow-up to the blog yesterday about Samantha Orobator, the British woman who became pregnant while incarcerated in Laos on drug trafficking charges, is escaping 'death by firing squad.' Whew! Like I said yesterday , I don't know if she was raped in prison or tried to get pregnant on purpose to spare her life, but it has worked. Orobator's trial in Laos will likely take place sometime next week. --Regina links: cnn.com, ... Read More
