Bacardi Sobers Up

BY Web Intern in General

Bacardi has done what any remorseful reveler suffering from the shame of a hangover should--'fess up and apologize. In a contrite email to Jezebel, vice-prez of the public relations agency that represents Bacardi explains that the ad ran for two months in the summer of 2008 and that the offending affiliate of Bacardi has shut the site down. He then offers an apology.                Alcohol jokes aside, props to them for a ... Read More
Electronic music and neon-striped undies are pretty powerful on their own, but when they work together, it's like a freakin' symbiotic psychedelic miracle. Exhibit A: the new video for These Are Powers' song 'Easy Answers' and the funky, delicious style of Ruffeo Hearts Lil Snotty. Like oreos and milk, Thelma and Louise, gin and tonics--These Are Powers and Ruffeo Hearts were made for each other. Get your own super-person bathing suits, hoodies, bodysuits, ... Read More
Rihanna will take the stand against Chris Brown this afternoon. It will be a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to go to trial. If convicted, Brown could go to prison for upwards of four years for his alleged battery of once-girlfriend Rihanna in February. The hearing will not be televised and Mark Geragos, Brown's attorney, will be able to cross-examine Rihanna. The news of the alleged battery, especially between a previously ... Read More
Many commercials use misogynistic messages and stereotypes to promote their product, especially products geared to men such as beer. As it turns out, advertisements targeted for women can be equally offensive and ridiculous. Take, for instance, the advertisements for Bacardi Breezers stating that the must-need accessory for a woman is an ugly female friend so they can seem more attractive in comparison. Society and the media are already encouraging impossible body ... Read More
Father's day is upon us, friends. And while it's perhaps not the most raucous holiday ever, there are a bunch of warm and fuzzy stories floating in the ether about dads and what they do. Top of the list is this bonanza of hip dadness offered by Grist: Green Dads We Heart . Eco-parenting has never been more attractive. I'm looking at you, Brad and Barack.          Speaking of Barack, he's written a straight-up tearjerker of a ... Read More
The Georgia Theater, which hosted bands like REM and the B-52s in their early days, burned badly today. It was basically gutted by fire damage, though the building is still standing. It's located in the heart of downtown Athens, right near the University of Georgia campus. Back in their early days, the B-52s paid the venue to be allowed to play there. The first show after the theater opened in 1978 was Sea Level, which formed out of remnants of the Allman ... Read More

Sunshine-y Day

It was so rainy and gloomy in NYC this week that I wish I'd had something like this to brighten the days. This umbrella changes color when it gets wet. Dry, it has a simple black and white design of a cityscape. But as soon as the rain hits it the white turns into a cheery rainbow sure to take the gloom and doom from even the stormiest of days. ... Everyone has that one friend who knows way too much about music. You know who I mean (if you don't, then maybe you are that friend). They are always the ones who have an iPod full of bands you've never heard of, they tell you who you might like (and are usually right) and let you know what concerts you just need to go to. They take one looks at your music collection and, stifling their snobbish laughter, tell you exactly who your next favorite band will be. They're ... Read More

Highway to Hell

BY Web Intern in General

This would certainly break up the monotony of a long highway drive. A college student in Raleigh (allegedly) rearranged a bunch of road cones and barrels into the shape of a monster. He even drew on a face. The monster was up for less than a day before authorities had it taken down. Joe Carnevale, the student accused, was arrested for this last week. He is being charged with larceny and property damage and goes to court on July 21. Hopefully he gets a judge with ... Read More
I'm sweating this song by Lily Allen. That jumpsuit! Those eyes! The heels! But as a rabid old-school country fan, I especially love the allusion to country music television specials from the days of yore. Just compare it with this performance by Loretta Lynn and Jeannie C. Riley. Uncanny, no? So many problems a girl can run into, just trying to get a good, erm, roll in the hay. ... Read More
